One can immediately see that the Waldorf had seen better days. It was a shadow of the Tiki Hotel it must have been in its prime. It exists in a “ not-too-safe” neighborhood populated by more than its share of street people, many with undesirable habits and infirmadies. The first disappointment was the fact that the hotel lacked an elevator and all the rooms were on other floors. Having suitcases and limping from a twisted ankle did not add to my experience. The room was adequate but the control for the shower was wonky at best. A slight nudge either way would lead to burns on the left or frostbite on the right. When we first came into the lobby we overheard a conversation between a patron and the desk clerk about the shower temperature swings but checked in anyway. The check in staff was helpful and pleasant. One even helped me with my heavy bags. On the plus side there was a bar/eatery attached to the ground floor with a fine selection of “ Pub Foods.” If you are looking for a budget minded experience in Vancouver, BC (and you don’t mind climbing a set of stairs) the Hotel on the Waldorf is the place to be. You asked for it….

Paradox properties are typically amazing with modern vibe. This stay at Paradox Vancouver for a special anniversary was tainted by a terrible front desk manager. Typically Paradox is a notch above with customer care. This manager seemed like she wanted to work for a Best Western. A simple thing that added no additional cost became a scene. I booked with the default setting of 1 guest. It was an anniversary trip so obviously 2 guest. When checking in the trainee greeted me with congratulations on anniversary. I asked the next day to update room for 2 guest so we could have breakfast. The room rate was the same regardless. The manager refused to do it for no apparent reason. Wow! Really disappointed in Paradox for not living up to level of service for this level hotel. I’ve also worked in the travel industry for over a decade so I empathize and get how hospitality should work. This is definitely not it at this level of hotel.
